Absolutely
all BMW boxer bikes have a strange halo that surrounds them;
a
little something that attracts us towards them irrevocably. By adding
GS to these machines, we're giving them the ability to ford rivers,
climb mountains or cross borders one after another if necessary.
GS is
synonymous of adventure.
The R1100
GS was the first "modern" GS. Immediate successor of the
old veteran and very close to the original r80, the r100 represented
a giant leap in all aspects: It kept the legendary reliability, but
added comfort, performance, power and great looks. All this -in
abundance- was able to revolutionize an already revolutionary concept
and bring back the myth.
It was very
rare to see this bike in Spain. The Japanese market was hard to
compete against and punished the sales in Spain. On the contrary, in
the rest of Europe -and the world-, this was the bike chosen by all
great travelers.
However
-and fortunately in this particular case-, time passed, making
available to a larger public what before was only affordable to few.
Let's take
it easy though. Our units are from 1993. They are already 21 years
old! Besides, these motorbikes used to be bought by real bikers,
people who are use to ride many miles. Therefore, to start
with, we will need to apply a good and thorough restoration.
The one
that we are about to restore is a 1998 model, almost the last to be
made, plus, it has ABS, which was an extra feature to take into
consideration.
The first
time he saw it, one of my sons said that it had a bird´s face –I
guess because of the prominent duckbill that characterizes it- and he
quickly nicknamed it Mordecai, after the main character from one his
favorite cartoons, "Regular Show". I think he is pretty
right!
This bike
is like some people: When it was young, it was stunningly beautiful
-and it still is- but you can see that time has caused some damage on
it. As a friend of mine says whenever he sees an interesting femme
approaching in the distance: "She looks quite alright from
here". It´s the same with this bike: She looks pretty, but in
the short distance, when you get closer, it becomes obvious that she
needs a good overview.
Luckily
this is a motorcycle, not a person, what makes the upgrade easier for
me to perform. The improvement is more than possible and will give
this beauty many more working years on the road.
...y lo iremos contando paso a paso!
...And we will tell you all about the transformation step by step!
